The last day of reading week
A late dinner at Mhel after driving down from Vaughan.

It was the last day of reading week, and I did not want to spend it at home. Things with my roommate had been unpleasant. A friend and I looked online for somewhere to eat, chose Mhel after reading the recommendations, and drove down from Vaughan.
Traffic held us up on the way into Toronto. By the time we arrived it was already late, and finding somewhere to park downtown took a while. I had put on Le Labo Bigarade 18 before leaving. Once we were out of the car, the air felt cool and comfortable.
Mhel was not directly on the street. We had to walk down a private road to reach it, which I liked. Inside, the room was very quiet. I remember the smell of black truffle from the food more clearly than most of the individual dishes.
Dinner came as several courses, close to an omakase format. I have forgotten what most of them were and can now put the meal back together only from the photographs. They also show things I did not pay much attention to that night: the retro interior and the plain ceramics, without the more modern look I might have expected.
After dinner we found the car and drove home.
